Q3 2026Current edition
Banks used AI to cut the payroll. Then they lent the money to build more of it.
Visa booked $563 million in severance as its engineers moved into agentic squads of two to four, Wells Fargo cut headcount for a 24th straight quarter and Block said agentic AI helped write and review nearly all its production code changes in June. In the same quarter, with US energy prices up 16.3% in a year, the Fed hiked and the 10-year Treasury reached 5.29%, US private credit defaults hit a record 6.3% and a Morgan Stanley-led group was in talks to lend about $15 billion for one AI data center with its own gas plant. Finance spent Q3 2026 using AI to shrink itself and lending to build more of it.
